Although the academic year has only just begun, many children have already lost interest in their studies and are not reading books. Boys, in particular, seem more affected. The main reasons include smartphones, tablets, and a lack of parental supervision.

How can we engage students who have lost interest in learning?

How can we regulate the use of phones, tablets, and games so that children take their studies seriously?

Speaking to Bizimyol.info about this issue, education expert Elchin Afandi said that managing lessons through interactive methods can somewhat increase students’ interest.

“The 2025–2026 school year has already been underway for about a month, and unfortunately, during this period we have observed that some students show little enthusiasm for the educational process. The main reason for this is that we live in an age of information — with technology advancing rapidly and social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and others being widely used by students. This has led to a certain kind of addiction. In addition, addiction to online games keeps many students away from learning altogether.
To address this, we must first hold preventive discussions with parents in educational institutions, encouraging them to help their children engage in the learning process and to keep them as far away from smartphones as possible. This should be not only a recommendation but also a requirement. Students themselves must also be engaged in conversations about this issue and encouraged to make participation in education their personal goal.”

Afandi added that identifying the types of content students are most interested in on the platforms they use and adapting those themes into the learning process could make lessons more appealing:

“By managing classes using interactive methods and integrating engaging content, we can at least partially increase students’ motivation to learn. Otherwise, unfortunately, with each passing year we will see more and more students disconnected from the educational process,” he concluded.
