“To restore relations with Russia to their previous level, a certain amount of time will be needed.”
“Russia is a major power. We are connected by historical, economic, cultural, and neighborly ties. Following the well-known plane incident, the resulting chill in our relations led to tension between our countries. Initially, the distorted presentation of the event by Russian authorities, and later the unlawful actions against our compatriots and diaspora activists living there, understandably caused dissatisfaction within Azerbaijani society.”
This was stated to the Bizimyol.info news portal by Member of Parliament Nasib Mahamaliyev.
According to the deputy, everyone was eagerly anticipating the Aliyev–Putin meeting:
“Confrontation is not a way out of the situation, nor is it a means of resolving problems. From this perspective, the meeting was extremely important. It was held quite successfully and in full accordance with the principles Azerbaijan has defended from the outset. The Russian president’s explanation can be interpreted as an apology. Compensation will be paid to the victims and the state, and those responsible will face legal consequences.”
Nasib Mahamaliyev emphasized that while restoring relations to their former level will require some time, the tension will be eliminated and many of the existing problems will eventually be resolved.
