From January to August 2025, a total of 74,481 cars worth $1,381,385,000 were imported into Azerbaijan, according to the State Customs Committee. Compared with last year, both the quantity and the value of imported vehicles have increased.
This raises several questions: What is driving the growth in car imports? Which types of vehicles dominate the market? And will prices fall, or continue to rise?
Speaking to Bizimyol.info, the Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Automobile Dealers Association (AADA), Eyyub Aliyev, said that compared with previous years, higher-quality cars are now entering the country.
“Last year, and even compared to the year before, there was an increase in the value of imported vehicles. This year, again compared with the previous one, the value of cars has risen. This shows that the reforms and projects approved by the country’s leadership, the dialogue between the state and the private sector, as well as the work carried out by relevant government institutions in the automobile sector, are beginning to bear fruit. After the restriction on cars older than 10 years was introduced, the vehicles entering the country have become more expensive and of higher quality. True, not entirely, but compared with previous years, we are receiving better cars,” Aliyev explained.
When it comes to new cars, he noted that Azerbaijan has granted special exemptions for hybrid and electric vehicles for several years. “Thanks to these incentives, more new cars—particularly hybrids—are being imported, because there is demand,” he said.
Aliyev emphasized that the expiration of the hybrid car exemption in January, and the lack of clarification from relevant agencies on whether it will be extended, has prompted many people to rush into bringing in new hybrid models. “Since they do not know what regulations will apply next year, they are trying to make the most of these benefits now. This explains why more vehicles, and healthier vehicles, are entering the country,” he noted.
However, Aliyev also pointed to a concerning trend: “Unfortunately, most of the imported cars are brought in by individuals and small-scale traders. In such cases, vehicles often arrive without warranty, which may create problems for the owners in the future.”
Overall, he said, the country’s vehicle fleet is undergoing renewal. “Work is ongoing in this direction. It is a very positive and commendable development,” Aliyev added.
