Baku, Azerbaijan – The high-profile trial of seven journalists from Abzas Media, charged with a range of serious offenses, is approaching its final stages at the Baku Serious Crimes Court. On June 10, under the oversight of Judge Rasim Sadixov, defense attorneys delivered their closing arguments, passionately advocating for their clients’ innocence.
According to Bizimyol.info, the prosecution previously demanded 12-year sentences for journalists Ulvi Hasanli, Hafiz Babali, and Farid Mehralizadeh, and 11 years for Sevinc Vaqifqizi, Mahammad Kekalov, Nargiz Absalamova, and Elnara Gasimova. The charges include smuggling, illegal entrepreneurship, money laundering, tax evasion, and document forgery, all allegedly committed as part of an organized group under Articles 206.4, 192.3.2, 193-1.3.1, 193-1.3.2, 213.2.1, 320.1, and 320.2 of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code.
The defense team rejected the accusations, arguing that the journalists are being persecuted for their professional work. Each attorney urged the court to issue an acquittal, emphasizing the lack of evidence linking their clients to the alleged crimes. The defendants themselves have consistently denied the charges, asserting that their arrests are a direct result of their journalistic activities.
The journalists requested additional time to prepare their final statements, and Judge Sadixov granted them 10 days. The trial is set to resume on June 20, when the court will hear the defendants’ closing remarks.
The case has drawn significant attention, raising concerns about press freedom and the treatment of independent media in Azerbaijan.
