Poetry, Politics, and Prison: The Trial That’s Dividing Azerbaijan
According to Bizimyol.info, the officers testified that the narcotics division received a tip-off about Elshadqizi. Acting on that information, they searched her residence, where they allegedly discovered a packet of narcotics inside her bag.

The high-profile trial of imprisoned TikToker, poet, and frequent TV commentator Ilhama Elshadqizi (Asgarova) continues in Baku. On June 11, the Baku Serious Crimes Court heard testimony from three police officers from the Yasamal District Police Department and the 26th Police Precinct, who are involved in the controversial case.

According to Bizimyol.info, the officers testified that the narcotics division received a tip-off about Elshadqizi. Acting on that information, they searched her residence, where they allegedly discovered a packet of narcotics inside her bag.

However, all three officers denied Elshadqizi’s claims that drugs were planted by the police, 200 manats were stolen from her home during the raid, and that she was physically assaulted in custody.

Elshadqizi, maintaining her innocence, gave an emotional rebuttal in court:

“What do you want from me? You're lying! You're playing with my life! I’ve lived half a century without touching drugs, and now suddenly I’m a junkie? I’m clean—I’m like a flower. Why smear my name with filth? They told me openly that I’m being punished for using the word ‘drill.’ A drill is a construction tool. If I had said ‘saw,’ would I still be punished the same way?”

The next hearing is scheduled for June 18.

Elshadqizi was arrested on December 24, 2024, at her residence located at 64 Salatyn Asgarova Street in the Yasamal district. She has been charged under Article 234.1-1 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the illegal acquisition, transportation, and possession of a large quantity of narcotic or psychotropic substances without intent to sell.

The prosecution alleges that 5.033 grams of narcotics were found in her bag inside a wardrobe during the police search.

A widely followed personality on Azerbaijani TikTok and known for her outspoken social commentary, Elshadqizi's arrest and trial have sparked significant public debate. Her claim—that she is being targeted for her words—has added a political dimension to the proceedings, raising questions about freedom of expression and the treatment of public figures in Azerbaijan.
