Man Sentenced to Five Years for False Bomb Threat at Baku Hotel

Baku, Azerbaijan – A man who made a false bomb threat targeting a hotel near the “Sahil” metro station in Baku has been sentenced to five years in prison, following a ruling by the Baku Serious Crimes Court on June 10.

According to Bizimyol.info, the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ “102” emergency service received a call reporting a bomb at the hotel. An investigation quickly determined the threat was a hoax. The caller, identified as Jamaladdin Jafarov, was charged under Article 216 of the Criminal Code for knowingly providing false information about terrorism.

“On the day of the incident, I was drunk. My sister passed away recently, and I haven’t been myself since. I was drinking heavily.”

Presided over by Judge Sabuhi Huseynov, the court handed Jafarov a five-year sentence, despite the prosecutor’s request for a six-and-a-half-year term. During the trial, Jafarov expressed remorse, admitting his guilt. “I was living on two manats a day in a rented place. My financial situation was dire,” he stated. “On the day of the incident, I was drunk. My sister passed away recently, and I haven’t been myself since. I was drinking heavily.”

The case underscores the authorities’ swift response to false threats and their commitment to public safety in Azerbaijan’s capital.
